Advice for

International

Students

Welcome to the UK!

Information

At Rivermead Islands, we are happy to accept students from all over the world. No matter where you are coming from, we are certain that we can make you feel at home in Chelmsford.

We know that moving to a new country on your own can be a little overwhelming. Our friendly team is here to help you with any questions about your accommodation to make sure that your move is as smooth as possible.

Your Booking

We recommend booking your room as soon as you have an offer from ARU to avoid disappointment. You can do so safe in the knowledge that if you don’t get a visa or your grades, you can cancel your booking. See your tenancy agreement for terms and conditions.

What to Bring

We will send you a resident handbook nearer your arrival time. This will include a full guide and details of what to bring and what not to bring. Your room will have plenty of storage space but also know that your bedrooms, bathrooms and shared living areas have all the furniture you should need. The Islands are only a couple of minutes’ walk to campus but if you want to purchase a bike for travelling around the city, bike racks are available. It is only a 10-minute walk to the city centre so bikes are a luxury and not an essential. Residents are strongly discouraged from bringing a car as no parking for residents is available on site or nearby.

Lifestyle and Community

Your rent includes all bills and utilities, cleaning fees and high-speed internet so that you can easily keep in touch with your friends and family back home.

RI, our resident concierge app, is available to all residents and lets you arrange practicalities like airport transfers and luggage storage, as well as access to local services like personal trainers, hairdressers and beauticians. If you don’t know anyone attending the university yet, you will soon. Regular social events will take place on the Islands to help you get to know your RI community and will be featured on the app.

Safety and Security

Safety is one of our main priorities. The Islands are fitted with CCTV throughout, each building has secure entry systems and our staff will be on site 24/7.
