Student Accommodation Checklist: What You’ll Need for September

If you’re off to university this September, you’re probably wondering what you should and shouldn’t be taking to your student accommodation. Some of this will depend on the type of accommodation you’re staying in and the course you’re studying. In this week’s edition, the Rivermead Islands team detail the fundamentals, the non-essentials and what will be included if you’ve opted for private student accommodation.

The Essentials

We’ve compiled a few categories of university essentials to consider taking with you to student accommodation this September! We’ll be putting you in touch with your flatmates in mid-August, so we suggest coordinating some of these with them.

Much of this category will come down to personal preference and what your student accommodation already offers.

    • Duvet, 2x pillows, 2x bed linen

    • Mattress protector

    • Things to make your room more homely – a rug, cushions, throw, pictures (bring command hanging strips)

    • Stationery and notebooks

    • Scissors

    • Reading books

    • Laptop and charger

    • Phone and charger

    • A small speaker

    • Whatever other tech you need for your course/leisure activities

    • Clothes, coats, gloves, bags, shoes, accessories, make-up and hair items

    • Coat hangers

    • Clothes airer, laundry basket, laundry tablets

    • Medical/personal items – paracetamol/plasters/sanitary products etc

    • Hot water bottle

    • A small bedroom bin

    • Cleaning wipes
    • Bicycle

Don’t Overpack

Remember, you can always buy anything you feel you need once you’ve settled in. Try not to overpack as this can cause over-crowding and it could mean wasting money unnecessarily! It might be that you decide to split essentials between a group of you and divide the cost. Sometimes, it’s a good idea to live somewhere for a little while and assess what you need, instead of splashing out before you get there. Bear in mind that you will most likely have to move things again summer, so keep track of what you’ve got.

Additionally, although we mentioned getting a few cupboard essentials, we wouldn’t recommended doing a full food shop and bringing it with you. When you arrive, find a local shop to get those fresh essentials. It’s also a good way to get to know the local area.
